BISMILLAHIR RAHMANIR RAHEEM
Indeed all praise is due to Allah (SWT), we seek His help, and we seek His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our souls and the evil of our actions. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomsoever Allah misguides, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except for Allah, the One Who has no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad (SAW) is his servant and messenger.
We all know that time flies so quickly and that we will be held to account for how we spend our precious lives. I, personally waste so much of my time astaghfirullah! So this reminder is for me first and foremost and hopefully, bi ithnillah, naseeha for my beloved sisters and brothers.
So here are some ideas of what we can do in our spare minutes, rather than waste them.
1) We could recite Al-Fatihah around 7 times in a minute if we read quickly and silently. Some scholars say that reciting Al-Fatihah is equal to 1400 hasanaat. If this is so, reading it seven times will equal 9800 hasanaat and Allah knows best.
2) We could recite Surah Ikhlas rapidly and silently (don't forget though, to ponder on the meaning of what you are reciting) say twenty times. We know from hadeeth that Prophet (SAW) told us that reading Surah Ikhlas is equal to reading one third of the Qur'an! So, if we read this surah twenty times, Insha'Allah, our reward will be the equivalent of reading Al-Qur'an seven times. If we did this in our spare minutes daily this would soon amount to 600 readings of Qur'an per month or even 7200 per year!
3) In one minute we could, bi 'ithnillah, read one page of Allah's book in Arabic or translation - or both.
4) We could memorise one short Ayah of the book of Allah.
5) We could utter the following words of dhikr around twenty times........
''La ilaha illallah, wahdahu la shareeka lah, lahul Mulku wa lahul Hamd, wa Huwa 'alaa kulli shay'in Qadeer'' ''There is none worthy of worship except for Allah, The One with no partners, to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all Praise, and He can do all things.''
The reward for reciting the above is mentioned in the Fortress of the Muslim as being that of ''freeing eight slaves from among the sons of Isma'eel''
6) We could say ''SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi'' 100 hundred times, bi'ithnillah. Rasulullah (SAW) said: ''Whoever says: SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi (Glorified is Allah and Praised is He) 100 times a day, wil have his sins forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea.'' (Bukhari 7/168, Muslim 4/2071)
7) In our spare minutes we could say: ''SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi, Subhanallahil-Adheem'' around 50 times, bi'ithnillah. In a hadeeth (Bukhari 7/168, Muslim 4/2072) Prophet (SAW) said that these words are: ''light on the tongue, weighh heavily in the balance, and are loved by the Most Merciful One''
We could say, up to 18 times Insha'Allah, the words which our beloved Prophet (SAW) said were ''dearer'' to him(SAW) than ''all that the sun rises upon'' (Muslim 4/2072) ''SubhanAllahi, walhamdulillahi, wa laa ilaha illAllahu, wallahu Akbar''
9)The following words are a blessed means to help us cope with difficulties and when we are trying to achieve a particular end..... In our spare we minute we could say: ''La Hawla wa laa Quwatta illa Billah'' perhaps more than 40 times bi'ithnillah. Rasulullah SAW said: ''O Abdullah bin Qais, should I not point you to one of the treasures of Paradise?'' So he SAW told him to say: La Hawla wa la Quwatta illa Billah ( There is no power and no might except by Allah)
10) We could utter the greatest word, the word of Tawheed: La ilaha illAllah around 100 times. In a hadeeth this kalima was described as ''the most excellent words of dhikr'' (At-Tirmithi 5/462, Ibn Majah 2/1249, and Al-Hakim who graded it authentic and Ath-Thahabi agreed 1/503. Al-Albani, Sahihul-Jami' As-Saghir 1/362)
11)Recite Al-Istighfar 100 times. Saying ''Astaghfirullah'' is a means of attaining forgiveness, of being granted a good life, of increasing in strength, of warding off disasters, of making things easier, of bringing rain and increase in wealth and children!! Obviously bi 'ithnillah and if He so wills.
12) Send prayers and blessing upon the Prophet Muhammad SAW fifty times by simply saying ''SallAllahu 'alayhi wa salam'' Allah SWT will send 10 times the blessings upon you, as each blessing you send brings ten like it!!
13) It only takes a minute to motivate your heart to give thanks to Allah, to love Him, put hope in Him, to fear Him, to long for Him and to, therefore, travel through the stages of 'Ubudiyyah (total enslavement to Allah)
14) Read two pages of any useful Islamic book that is easy to understand.
15)Uphold the ties of kinship. Ring your Mum or any relative.
16)Raise your hands and make du'a.
17)Give salams to/or shake hands with a number of sisters.
18)Forbid an evil action
19)Enjoin a good
20)Offer sincere advice
21)Console someone
22)Remove a harmful object from the path of your muslim brother or sister.
Finally just remember this......that making the most of one minute will Insha'Allah motivate us the make the most of our time.
